How to Track Your UPI Spending in India (PhonePe, GPay, Paytm)
Written by Periwin Solutions
UPI was supposed to make money simpler. And it did, transfers, bill payments, and shop payments all happen in seconds now. But here is the side effect nobody talks about: when spending is that easy, you stop noticing it.
A ₹40 chai here, a ₹250 Swiggy order there, a ₹1,200 UPI payment to the kirana store. At the end of the month, your bank statement says you spent ₹18,000, and you genuinely cannot remember on what.
The fix is not to stop using UPI. The fix is to see it clearly.
Why UPI spending is so easy to lose track of
Three things make UPI uniquely hard to budget:
- It is too fast. The transaction is done before you think about it.
- It is spread across apps. PhonePe, GPay, Paytm, and your bank app all hold pieces of your history.
- Small amounts hide in plain sight. ₹50 transactions feel harmless, but twenty of them a week is ₹4,000 a month.
You don’t need to change your payment habits. You just need one place where every payment lands.
The daily logging habit (2 minutes a day)
The most reliable method is boring but effective:
- At the end of the day, open your main UPI app (PhonePe or GPay, whichever you use most).
- Tap through today’s transaction list.
- Log each expense into an expense tracker with a category: food, transport, groceries, recharges, UPI transfers.
Two minutes at night. That is the whole system.
If you skip a day, don’t chase the backlog, just start fresh the next day. Missing one day is fine; missing a week is how budgets die.
Create categories that match how you actually spend
Generic categories like “Miscellaneous” are where budgets go to die. Instead, create the categories you saw in your UPI history:
- Food delivery (Swiggy, Zomato), usually the biggest silent leak
- Kirana / groceries
- Auto / cab (Uber, Ola, Rapido)
- Recharges & DTH (Jio, Airtel, Vi)
- Transfers to family, count these as expenses only if they are not coming back
- Shopping (Amazon, Flipkart, Myntra)
When you name the category honestly, you stop being able to pretend the money went somewhere reasonable.
The trick that actually reduces spending
Once you have a week of real data, look for the “convenience tax”:
- Delivery charges on orders under ₹300
- Multiple auto rides when one longer ride would have cost less
- Recharging ₹99 every two days instead of one ₹249 plan
None of these feel like decisions. Logging them for a week turns invisible habits into visible numbers, and visible numbers change behaviour on their own.
Why an offline tracker works better than your bank app
Your bank app already shows your UPI history, so why log it again? Because a bank statement shows you what happened. A budget app shows you what it means:
- Your daily spending limit, updated as you log
- A budget per category with a progress bar
- A monthly report that tells you where the money actually went
CashMate does all of this on-device, no internet required, no account linking, and your spending history never leaves your phone.
Start tonight: log today’s UPI transactions, set a monthly food-delivery budget, and check back in a month. You will know exactly where your money went, for the first time in a long time.
