How to Use CashMate App: A Complete Beginner's Guide
Written by CashMate Team
CashMate is built to be simple. But if you’ve never used a personal finance app before, even simple can feel unfamiliar. This guide walks you through the app from the very beginning, so you can start tracking with confidence.
What CashMate Does (and Doesn’t Do)
Before anything else — let’s be clear about what CashMate is:
It is: A personal finance app for tracking income and expenses, managing your budget, and understanding where your money goes.
It is not: A bank, a mobile money app, a lending platform, or anything that holds your actual money. It only holds your records of money — your data stays on your phone.
It does not collect your data. Nothing is sent to any server. Everything is local, private, and yours.
Step 1: Download and Open
Download CashMate on Android Download on iPhone
No account creation. No email. No password. Open the app — you’re ready.
Step 2: Set Up Your Categories
CashMate comes with default categories that cover most people’s needs: Food, Transport, Housing, Health, Entertainment, and more. You can customise these to match your actual life. Common additions for users in East Africa, South Asia, and Southeast Asia:
- Mobile Money Charges
- School Fees
- Family Support
- Mobile Data
- Market / Groceries
- Festival / Events
Set up categories that reflect your real spending before logging anything — it makes the data much more useful.
Step 3: Log Your First Expense
Every time you spend money, log it:
- Open CashMate
- Tap the + button (add expense)
- Enter the amount
- Select a category
- Add a note if helpful (optional)
- Save
That’s it. The whole process takes 10 seconds.
Step 4: Log Income Too
When you receive money — salary, business income, money from family, mobile money received — log it as income. This lets CashMate show you the full picture: money in, money out, and the balance.
Step 5: Check Your Summary
The summary view shows you total income, total expenses, and net position for any period. Check this daily for 30 seconds, and weekly for a proper review.
Look for categories that surprise you. Usually there are 1-2 areas where spending is higher than you thought.
Works Offline — Always
CashMate requires no internet. You can log expenses at a market with no signal, in a rural area, or during load-shedding. The app works exactly the same offline as online.
Common Questions
My data disappeared — what happened? CashMate stores data locally on your device. If you clear app data, uninstall, or change devices without a backup, data may be lost. Use the backup feature to protect your records.
Can I use it for multiple people (family/household)? Yes — create a shared expense category or simply use one device for household tracking, logging whoever’s spending.
Does it handle multiple currencies? You can track in any currency — just be consistent about which currency you’re entering amounts in.
CashMate is designed to remove every barrier to tracking. No internet needed. No bank account needed. No technical knowledge needed. Just open it and log what you spend.
