The Sunk Cost Fallacy: Why We Throw Good Money After Bad

The Sunk Cost Fallacy: Why We Throw Good Money After Bad

Written by Anish Bhattarai

The sunk cost fallacy is the cognitive error of continuing a behavior or investment simply because we have already invested resources into it, even when future prospects are dismal.

We keep pouring £800 repairs into an aging car because ‘I just spent £1,000 on the gearbox last month.’ We keep paying an £80 monthly gym subscription because ‘I paid a £150 joining fee.’ We hold onto plummeting speculative investments because ‘I can’t sell until I break even.‘

Sunk Cost vs Rational Forward Looking

Money spent in the past is gone forever. It cannot be recovered by making further irrational decisions today.

ScenarioThe Sunk Cost ReactionThe Rational Forward-Looking ActionFinancial Impact
Aging Car with Monthly RepairsSpend £900 on suspension because £1,200 was spent on brakesSell car for scrap or trade-in; buy reliable used modelSaves £2,400 in recurring mechanic bills
Unused Annual SubscriptionKeep paying £45/month hoping you will start attendingCancel immediately; cut ongoing losses to zeroSaves £540 per year in wasted fees
Depreciating Tech / Hobby GearKeep guitar gathering dust because you spent £600 on itSell on secondhand market for £350; invest the proceedsLiquidates cash for high-yield savings

The Clean Slate Question

Whenever you are struggling to cut an unprofitable expense, ask the Clean Slate Question:

‘If I woke up today with zero previous history with this asset or contract, would I willingly pay today’s price to enter into it?’

If the answer is no, sever it immediately. Do not honor the ghost of past money by wasting future wealth.
